Translocation Coffer

Wondrous Item, very rare

This is a small, finely crafted wooden box, measuring 14 inches by 8 inches by 5 inches. It can hold up to 1/8th of cubic foot of messages or items. The box is adorned with a carving in common reading: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this coffer from the completion of its task.”

Once per day, while holding the box, you can speak the name of an recipient, and the box disappears from your hand. After exactly 1 hour it reappears next to the recipient. This works as long as the recipient is someone you have met before, is alive and is on the same plane of existence as you.

When the box appears next to the recipient, they have a 10-minute window to open the box, retrieve the items or messages contained within, and/or add their own items or messages to the box. After 10 minutes, the box disappears once again. After another 1 hour has passed, the box reappears next to the original sender, whether or not the recipient had interacted with it.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: answer and case.

Potentially very useful.

Nightmare's Call

Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement by a non-good creature)

This small brass whistle is adorned with a carving horse's head, wreathed in flames. When blown, it emits an eerie, haunting sound. The bearer of this whistle can harness its power to summon a Nightmare steed from the depths of the lower planes.

As an action, if you blow the whistle while attuned to it, you summon a Nightmare as if casting the Find Steed spell. The summoned Nightmare is bound to the bearer and serves as a loyal steed.

Additionally, when the bearer is riding the summoned Nightmare, an aura of malevolent energy emanates from them. Creatures hostile to the bearer have disadvantage on saving throws against fear effects while within 10 feet of the Nightmare.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: fiends and recruitment.

Very intimimdating.

Assassin's Cloak

Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement)

This cloak is made from a deep black fabric that seems to attract the shadows. When you don this cloak and attune to its power, the shadows become your ally, aiding your movements and concealing your presence.

While wearing the Assassin's Cloak, you gain the following benefits:

  • Nearby shadows extend around you, obscuring your movements and making it easier for you to blend into the darkness. When you are in an area of dim light, you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide or move silently, even if you don't have cover or are in plain sight.

  • Once per long rest, as an action, you can command the cloak to envelop you in shadows, allowing you to teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see, and that is dimly lit or in darkness. This ability can be used to move through solid objects, such as walls or doors, as long as the restrictions are met.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: shadows and widen.

Shamelessly lifted from a Vampire: The Masquerade discipline.

Infernal Contract

Wondrous Item, rare

This small weathered scroll bears infernal inscriptions. When the contract is signed, it binds the bearer to a minor devil, granting them the right to request a single favor. The contract specifies that the devil can refuse to fulfill the favor, but are obligated to entertain most reasonable requests.

To activate the contract, the bearer must speak aloud their request while holding the it in their hand. If the favor is both possible and reasonable, the devil will appear before them and is compelled to consider the request. The GM has discretion on what counts as a reasonable request.

If the devil agrees, and once the favor has been granted, the contract crumbles to dust, freeing the devil from its binding. If the devil does not agree, it disappears and the contract remains in effect. Another request cannot be made until next dawn.

While the contract is in effect, the devil cannot directly harm the bearer, but they may seek alternative means to cause mischief or disrupt the their plans.

If the contract is found signed, the GM can roll or choose from the following table to determine the type of the devil:

Devil's Contract Devil Type

d100 Devil Type
01-30 Imp
31-45 Spined Devil
46-55 Bearded Devil
56-65 Barbed Devil
66-75 Chain Devil
76-85 Bone Devil
86-90 Horned Devil
91-95 Erinyes
96-100 Ice Devil

Roleplay

The devil wants to be free of the contract, so will begrudgingly agree to many requests, even those that might put them in minor danger. If they think the request is too dangerous, or outrageous, they will certainly refuse. There are some things that even devils won't stoop to – most are lawful.

The devil can also negotiate with the bearer if they don't like the terms of the favor. Persuasion or Deception checks from both parties many be required.

Gazing Monkey Idol

Wondrous Item, rare

This small jade idol, carved in a distant jungle, depicts a mischievous monkey with its hands covering its eyes. It has 3 charges. While holding the idol, you can use an action to spend 1 charge while presenting it to a creature within 30 feet of you. The idol's hands move revealing the monkey's sapphire eyes. The creature must then make a Wisdom saving throw, DC 15, or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Even if the creature tries to avoid looking at the idol, the sapphire eyes irresistibly draw the creature's gaze. However, if the creature is blinded, or is otherwise obscured from seeing the idol, it has no effect.

Additionally, if a creature successfully saves against the idol's effect, it becomes immune to the idol's effect for the next 24 hours.

The Monkey Idol regains 1d4-1 charges daily at dawn. If the last charge is spent, roll a d20. On a 1, the Monkey Idol crumbles into dust.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: stunned and monkey.

Rockstar's Robe

Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement by a bard)

This robe is woven from fine silk threads dyed in vibrant colors that seem to shine and shimmer. Prized by bards, obtaining the robe is a true symbol of your Rockstar status. The robe is loud in more ways than one.

While wearing and attuned to this magical robe, you gain the following benefits:

  • You are proficient in the Performance skill if you are not already. If you are, you may double your proficiency bonus to any Performance checks involving music.

  • Once per day, as an action, you can activate a musical aura targeting yourself and up to 5 other creatures within 30 feet of you. Creatures targeted by the aura gain advantage on Performance checks involving music. Additionally, the voices and musical instruments used in the performance are magically amplified up to three times their normal volume. The aura lasts for 30 minutes or until you dismiss it as a free action.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: robe and arrangement.

This would also work pretty well as the pick of destiny.

TIL The bards in 5e don't only not get a performance proficiency automatically, they don't even need one mechanically. Wild.

Weeks 9 & 10 Review

These weeks were tough. I'm not sure if it's just I got unlucky with my words and armour is tough to come up with, or if I'm just running low on inspiration entering the last stretch. Over these weeks, my favourite item was the [[gazing-monkey-idol]].

As mentioned, armour week was rough. Since it's armour, you really want it's ability to be to do with defence. But there's only so many ways you can do that without adding extra crunchiness to combat. The only one I did that felt really outside the box was [[papier-mache-plate-armor]], which I suppose pairs well with a [[shoddy-weapon]].

Heading in to the end of the game, and with a new kitten taking a lot of my free time, I have decided to allow myself to prepare up to 10 days ahead. This will also free up some time to work on the compilation book.

The book is already underway. It will include a short opened-ended shop scenario do go with the items. I'm hoping to release as pdf and fantasy grounds mod. I'm planning on the pdf being pay-what-you-want.

I attempted some “art”work for the [[infernal-contract]]. I've done worse, but I am not an artist. For [[the-shopkeepers-glasses]] I used art that has fallen in to the public domain. But it's almost impossible to find PD art that fits the items description, and I want the freedom to write descriptions that are not beholden to an existing image. Commissioned art may be the only way to go, but it's tough to justify the expense.

Welcome to Wands Week, where I will whisk you away to a wondrous and whimsical world of wands! Without wider wait, wand one: the [[wand-of-decoration]].

Follow me on Mastodon/Fediverse for more! @joe@social.jifish.co.ukCopyright

Wand of Decoration

Wand, very rare

This wand is painted with rings of bright yellow and blue paint. The Wand of Decoration possesses the magical ability to conjure furniture and ornaments, allowing you to make a room into a personalized and aesthetically pleasing space.

The Wand of Decoration has 10 charges. It cannot have more than 10 charges. At dawn, roll a d10. On a 10, the wand regains a single charge.

  • Creation: While holding the wand, you can use an action to expend a charge and choose an unoccupied space within 30 feet of you. The wand conjures a piece of furniture or an ornament of your choice into that space. The size of the conjured object can be no larger than a 10-foot cube and it must be worth 50 gold or less. The conjured object appears instantaneously in the chosen space. You can create multiple objects in a single action, but each object requires the expenditure of a charge.
  • Dismissal: As an action, you can tap a conjured object with the Wand of Decoration, dismissing it from existence. When an object is dismissed, the wand regains a charge. Objects that have been destroyed do not regain a charge when dismissed. Only objects conjured by this specific wand can be dismissed by it.

The GM has ultimate discretion on what counts as “furniture” or an “ornament.” Players should feel free to customize their objects cosmetically; but something like a lead-lined bed, or a vase made of cheese wouldn't count. GMs also decide what counts as a single object. For example, a bed with pillows, mattress and covers could reasonably count as a single object.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: placing and decoration. It's wands week!

I guess you could use this to barricade. I'm sure players could find other ways to break it. 🙃 But the idea was too cool not to do. I like that I got to use charges in an unusual way.
