Potion of Thermal Equilibrium

Potion, rare

Instead of the traditional glass vial, this potion is contained a watertight leather pouch made to resist extreme heat or cold. The potion's color varies based on the ambient temperature, from a deep red when cold, a bright blue when hot, or a muted purple in-between.

When you drink this potion, your body's natural abilities are temporarily enhanced, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of temperatures. For the next 6 hours, you are immune to exhaustion caused by extreme heat or cold.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: pouch and accommodate. It's potions week!

This one was rough. These words were screaming to be a wondrous item, not a potion. I also felt it was cheating if the potion wasn't something someone could drink. So out with any bag-of-holding-like ideas. What I came up with was a bit of a stretch.

Aconitum Extract

Potion, uncommon

This potion is a bitter liquid with a faint purple tinge. When consumed, it provides the drinker with a measure of stability in their current form, preventing them from transforming for a day.

For the next 24-hours:

  • You are unable to use, or be the target of, any abilities or spells that would cause you to change shape or form, including but not limited to Wild Shape, Lycanthropy, Polymorph, Shapechange, and similar effects.

  • Any ongoing transformations are immediately suppressed, and you revert to your natural form.

The potion does not cure or remove any existing curses or conditions that cause shape-changing.

Aconitum Extract is sometimes known as Wolfsbane Potion. The eponymous main ingredient is fairly common flower, but quite toxic if not prepared with the proper skill.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: druidic and disrupt. It's potions week!

This might serve as a way to depower a foe that uses a shape-changing ability, or as temporary relief for a character with lycanthropy.

Frogsbane Potion

Potion, common

This potion is a bitter liquid with a faint pink tinge. When consumed, it prevents the drinker from transforming in to a frog (or similar creature) for a day.

For the next 24-hours:

  • You are unable to use, or be the target of, any abilities or spells that would cause you to change shape or form, if the new form has the Amphibious trait.

  • Any ongoing transformation in a form that has the Amphibious trait is immediately suppressed, and you revert to your natural form.

The potion does not cure or remove any existing curses or conditions that cause you to change in to a frog.

Creation Notes

Bonus variant of [[aconitum-extract]]. Had to do the Simon the Sorcerer reference.

Potion of Coordination

Potion, rare

This strange pink bubbly potion is uncannily difficult to spill accidently. The bottle contains a large dose that can be shared by up to 4 creatures. If consumed by:

  • 1 person, it lasts 1 hour

  • 2 people, it lasts 30 minutes

  • 3 people, it lasts 20 minutes

  • 4 people, it lasts 15 minutes

During this time, you gain the following effects:

  • Your dexterity score is increased by 2

  • You have advantage on any roll that requires coordination with another drinker of the same dose. This bonus is only given if the coordination is necessary or advantageous. The GM has final discretion on which situations this applies to.

  • You have advantage on Dexterity saving throws.

  • You have advantage on Acrobatics checks.

If a drinker is affected by more than one Potion of Coordination, the duration or the effects do not stack; only the last potion is in effect.

If you attempt to combine two Potions of Coordination, the mixture will violently bubble and froth as gasses escape. Ultimately, one potion's worth of liquid will be lost.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: desire and coordination. It's potions week!

Didn't want to make a simple dexterity potion, which I don't think exist in any official 5e source, but is very obvious all the same.

Mirror of Fabulous Style

Wondrous Item, very rare

This oval mirror has an ornate wooden frame that has been painted gold. The mirror has been enchanted to help it's owner look their very best.

The Mirror can be used once per day. When the user gazes into the mirror and speaks the command word, their reflection comes to life and offers advice on how to improve their appearance or how to use a disguise kit. The advice lasts until the user leaves the mirror's presence. During this time, the reflection can alter it's clothes, hair style, accessories etc., to allow the user to quickly try different styles. But the mirror cannot alter the user's appearance, only offer advice.

If the user spends at least one hour following the mirror's advice, choose one of the following effects. Only one person can use the mirror at a time.

  • If you ask the mirror for general advice, you gain advantage on Deception and Persuasion checks for the rest of the day.

  • If you ask for help with a disguise kit, any creature attempting to see through the disguise has disadvantage on their check, until you remove the disguise.

  • If you ask the mirror for advice on dressing as a character for a performance, you gain advantage on applicable Performance checks for the next 4 hours.

The mirror is intelligent. If it feels it has been treated poorly it may give bad advice that has the opposite effect of the above. This might happen if it has been neglected and is gaining cobwebs, or if it has been stolen away from it's legitimate owner.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: image and assess.

Lots of roleplay possibilities with this one.

Dragon Egg Backpack

Wondrous Item, rare

This backpack is covered in dragon egg shell which has been meticulously collected by a Kobold dragon seeker. Carefully selected fragments of shell have been glued with sovereign glue to a thin leather interior, resulting in a waterproof, lightweight and yet extraordinarily durable bag. Most bags are made with a single type of dragon egg, but combining multiple types is possible.

The backpack can hold one cubic foot or 50 pounds of gear.

The backpack has 60 hit points, a damage threshold of 10, and an AC of 18. As long as the backpack has more than 20 hit points, any objects contained within it are protected from harm. The backpack is immune to damage types determined by the kinds of dragon eggs used in it's creation.

If the owner were to obtain some more egg fragments and some sovereign glue, they could add additional immunity types and restore the backpack's lost hit points.

The GM can roll on the following tables to create a specific bag. Optional: Re-roll duplicate immunities.

Dragon Egg Backpack Number of Egg Types

d100 Number of egg types Rarity
1 – 70 1 Rare
71 – 94 2 Very Rare
95 – 99 3 Very Rare

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: dragon and rubbish.

Rubbish refers to both the egg fragments themselves, and the contents of the average adventurer's backpack.

Wine of the Drunken Master

Potion, rare

This brown bottle contains a potent rice wine. The sake was brewed by a master, who infused it with their ki.

The bottle contains 2d4+1 (6) swigs. As an action, a monk can drink one swig to regain 1 ki point, provided they are not already poisoned.

After drinking the wine, you must make a Constitution saving throw, DC 12. On a failed save, you are poisoned until your next short or long rest. If you drink another swig of the wine before taking a short or long rest, the DC of the Constitution saving throw increases by 1 for each additional swig taken.

If the drinker is not a monk and cannot use ki, they must make the Constitution saving throw at disadvantage.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: wastes and monk.

Another incredibly appropriate wildcard word.

Suspended Intelligence Crystal

Wondrous Item, very rare

This clear quartz crystal contains a suspended disembodied intelligence, ready to be infused in to a weapon or armor. The intelligence was previously attached to another magical object and was preserved in this crystal after the object was destroyed.

The crystal can be attached to a non-magical weapon or piece of armor to create a new sentient magical object. Attaching the crystal requires a 1-hour ritual, and once attached it becomes a permanent part of the object. Afterwards the item becomes magical and now requires attunement. If it's a weapon, you gain +2 to hit and damage with the weapon. If it's armor, you gain +2 to your AC while donning the armor. Once attuned, the intelligence can communicate telepathically with its owner.

The intelligence has it's own personality determined by rolling on the below table. If the owner of the object frequently comes in to conflict with the goals of the intelligence it may remove it's attunement from, or even attempt to take control of, it's owner.

Crystal Personality Table

d8 Personality Note
1 Arrogant The intelligence is extremely confident in its abilities and looks down on others.
2 Inquisitive The intelligence is always seeking knowledge and is curious about the world.
3 Manipulative The intelligence has a talent for manipulating people to achieve its own ends.
4 Timid The intelligence is shy and hesitant, and prefers to avoid confrontation.
5 Aggressive The intelligence is quick to anger and always ready for a fight.
6 Melancholic The intelligence is melancholic and brooding, prone to dark thoughts and introspection.
7 Enthusiastic The intelligence is always excited and eager, with an infectious enthusiasm.
8 Protective The intelligence has a strong protective instinct and will do anything to defend its owner.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: suspended and intelligence.

I like objects that give the players some measure of control over how the item is used.

Budget Weapon

Weapon (any), common

This weapon is made using inferior components and techniques. It is easily damaged.

When you score a critical hit with this weapon and deal damage, the weapon breaks and becomes useless. The weapon can be repaired using Smith's Tools, but once repaired it retains this property.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: equipment and budget. It's weapons week!

Befallen Snow-Glass

Wondrous Item, rare

This sealed bottle contains a tiny model of a house, a handful of wax flakes and is filled with a clear liquid. When shaken, it provides a small diorama of a snowy-day.

When the bottle is smashed or unsealed, magic rushes from the bottle and the following effects occur:

  • The temperature in a 500 ft. radius of the current location drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) for 48 hours.
  • It begins to snow, leading to 6 inches of snowfall in the same radius and time.
  • The bottle loses it's magic. If you were careful when unsealing it, the item will still function as a non-magical snow-glass.

Creation Notes

Inspiration words: winter and temporary.

Another weather bottle to go with [[bottle-of-wind]] and [[lightning-in-a-bottle]].
